YCJA Extra Judicial Measures

What Are YCJA Extra Judicial Measures?

Extra Judicial Measures are an alternative to being criminally charged. Low risk youth 12 to 17 years old who have committed an offence are referred by City Police.  After discussing the incident with a counselor, this youth chooses an appropriate meaningful consequence and within a few weeks reports and verifies its completion.  If the youth shows signs of being higher risk of re-offending, referrals are made to appropriate community resources.

Why Does The John Howard Society Run This Program?

We believe in the prevention of crime by providing intervention for individuals who are at risk of becoming involved in criminal activity.  The Extra Judicial Measures program allows us to assess the youth for risk factors, then provide or refer to appropriate community services.

Who Is Eligible?

Youth 12-17 who are referred by City Police.
