Bail Verification/Supervision Program

What Is The Bail Program?

The Bail Verification and Supervision Program serves two principles upon which our democratic justice system is based: presumption of innocence before trial and fair treatment of all people regardless of social and economical background.

How Does The Program Work?

  • An interview is conducted prior to the accused appearing in bail court
  • Identifies the availability of a surety for accused persons
  • Provides to the courts verified, neutral and factual information about an accused person such as address and place of employment
  • Provides supervision, counseling and referral services for people who are released from custody by the courts
  • Provides advocacy, support and collaboration with other community agencies
  • Assists clients in addressing issues including mental health, addictions, housing, employment and interpersonal supports while awaiting trial

Why Does The John Howard Society Run This Program?

To provide supervision of individuals released from jail on bail conditions, to reduce the risk of failing to appear in court.  The program also aims to reduce the high numbers of people remanded into overcrowded correctional facilities awaiting trial.

Who Is Eligible For JHS Supervision?

Accused persons:

  • Must not have three or more breach convictions or failing to appear convictions in the past four years
  • Must be 16 years of age or older
  • Display the willingness to participate in the program

This program is funded by the Ministry of the Attorney General
