Discharge Planning

What Is The Discharge Planning Program?

The program offers assistance with pre-release planning and institutional adjustment for those in custody.  For people who are re-entering the community after a period of custody or already living in the community, the program offers information on housing, clothing, finances and other community services. The program also provides short term counseling for those who need to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

How Does The Program Work?

A counsellor is available for in-office visits.  For visits at the jail, contact can be made through the jail staff or by calling the John Howard Society collect, between 8:30 a.m. and 9:15 a.m. Monday to Thursday.
The program encourages emotional and physical health and develops confidence, assertiveness and self-motivation.

Why Does The John Howard Society Run This Program?

Counselling and Discharge Planning is at the heart of the John Howard Society. This program is designed for those in custody, offering them the support they will need to make the changes necessary to leave the criminal lifestyle.  For those who are already living in the community, it offers them ongoing support to ensure a healthy lifestyle.  Individuals get help making plans and setting goals.  The goal is crime prevention.  Discharge Planning services provided include: housing, food, clothing, referrals for legal/financial aid and referrals to other treatments.

Who Is Eligible?

  • the general community over 16 years of age who have been or are in conflict with the law
  • individuals in custody at the Algoma Treatment and Remand Centre

This program is funded by the United Way and the Algoma Treatment & Remand Centre
