Conditional release for persons serving a federal term of incarceration is either granted by the National Parole Board or earned through legislated designations. Community assessments are conducted to assist in determining if an offender can be realeased from custody. The offender is then released from a federal penitentiary to the community for the remainder of their sentence; which is supervised by a federal parole officer. When the federal parole officer is unavailable, the John Howard Society assists in supervising the offender.
Why does the John Howard Society run this program?
The John Howard Society assists the parole office with these functions to increase the knowledge of parolees of other services available to them through our office. We are able to connect with family members of those being considered for conditional release while doing community assessments which makes a vital link for the parolees when released into our community. Links to services increases the likelihood of successful integration and reduces the chance of reoffending. Our ultimate goal in working with Correctional Services Canada is to ensure our community has safe alternatives for those recently released from prison, thus increasing the safety of the whole community.
